Biodegradable Prayer Flags

Bio Degradable Buddhist Prayer Flags and Scarves

These Prayer Flags and scarves are biodegradable and compostable. They are produced locally, an initiative led by a woman, Ang Dolma, who creates employment for 8 other women and gives a portion of the proceeds to various social causes.

Ang Dolma got inspired by her mother. Her mother was concerned by all the synthetic that is used by the Buddhist community in their daily religious practices in the form of Khada and Prayer Flags. In 2011 Ang Dolma’s father passed away and during the pyre ceremony, she realised and understood the concerns of her mother while smelling and observing the plastic fumes coming out of the khadas and prayer flags while burning.

Prayerflags and Kadhas hold high religious and cultural value in the Himalayan community and are burnt or abandoned on hills with their belief that the mantras on them will reach the deities through sun, rain and air. The Carbon Footprint had been overlooked. A shift to biodegradable flags and shawls takes only a small step but has a positive impact on our suffering environment.

Om Mani Padme Hum

Om Mani Padme Hum
OM
is a combination of aa, oo, and mm – body, mind, and speech. This can be pure or impure. The goal? Transform impure to pure.

This transformation is possible via MANI – selflessly doing good, PADMEwisdom, and HUMthe combination of the two.

When hung, the prayers written in the flags are taken and spread by the wind to benefit all beings on earth. This is a combination of using wisdom to do good that helps purify the body, mind, and speech.

The colors represent earth, water, wind, fire, and ether – five elements that represent the philosophy of transition from earthly needs to nothingness.
